tips for self care

Tips for self care when running on empty

When you think of caring, who do you think of?  Probably not yourself.  We have a huge tendency to look after everyone else and then what happens?  We forget self care.  Imagine if you went to see a doctor and he was dripping blood from an open wound – I guess you would suggest that he sorted himself out before he came near you.  And that’s what we all need to do.  We can’t help others from a place of pain and hurt, from a place of emptiness.  The skill lies in finding ways to make ourselves whole and robust…

Clear the screen

Do you have a lot of ‘yes buts’ in your life?  Do you spend a lot of time being afraid of what might happen or looking to recreate something good that has happened before?  Bevis tells us the tale of the rattlesnake and the butterfly.  If you are out walking and you encounter a rattlesnake you will quite probably be pretty freaked, I know I would.  If you are not careful you will be on the lookout for rattlesnakes every time you go out – especially if you go back to where you saw it the first time.    How about…

what motivates me

What Motivates me?

I am often puzzled about what motivates me.  I want to have high minded principles and be motivated by altruism; ‘I do what I do because its important to help other people’.  To a certain extent this is completely true but I am also motivated by money.  This has been a big learning point for me.  I claim that I love what I do so much that I would do it for free, but the honest reality is different.  This is so important, our clients / friends / colleagues will often tell us what they think we want to hear,…

frustration

Frustration!

I used to experience frustration when things didn’t turn out how I had planned.  I have a new idea at least every day, I make plans and I expect things to work perfectly.  I expect to write that book in a week, get lots of clients, get fit and lose weight.  I thought this was all quite reasonable. But low and behold, it didn’t all happen!  The outcomes didn’t meet my expectations, I was frustrated (after all, I had done my best, I’d worked really hard) and I was so very disappointed.  The fact that I had written the opening…

NLP and deep wisdom complimentary or contrary?

Many people in the coaching and personal development world can at times get carried away by the latest coaching trend, ditching their previous philosophy to latch onto the latest thing… Within NLP one of the key principles is that of curiosity which means taking a look at all development principles candidly and assessing how each can help people and in what context… Having spent hours and hours reading a variety of books from authors such as, Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, Michael Neill, Sydney Banks, George Mumford (to name a few) certain conclusions can be drawn… Eckhart Tolle I think explains…

the ego

The ego versus the true self

The Ego. These words came out of a recent coaching session and I thought they may be of use to you… NB Whatever words I use are never accurate enough to properly describe the true self… The egoic mind can be brash or arrogant. It lies within our own head and can be anxious, worried or a victim. It has dramas, battles and is addicted to pleasure, distractions and pain. It is the emotion which arises from those pleasures, distractions & pains and is triumphant when things are perceived to have gone well and despondent when things do not… The…

are your people motivated

Are your people motivated to perform?

Are your people motivated to perform? It’s natural that senior managers focus immediately goes to profits, for profits are real, measurable and a goal. However, to get there organisations need to consider deferring immediate gratification and explore the less tangible world of motivation, of feelings and wants of people;  if we can do this, the rewards are vast because productivity gains will be enormous. Performance is about being on top of our work, of being able to achieve things for both ourselves and for the organisation, and, if we perform at a high level for any length of time we start becoming…
