9 Motivational Preferences
When you choose to complete a Motivational Map®, you are introduced to a new, simple language which will help you to understand yours and others motivation. The creator of Motivational Maps® James Sale, identified 9 main motivational preferences which fall naturally into 3 categories. After the completion of your Map, you will be debriefed, where your highest and lowest preference will be identified.
It’s important to note that each motivational preference has a cluster of values and characteristics beneath it. Some individuals will have all of these present, however for others you may only see some of them. For example, It’s possible to have someone who has a high Builder preference who is more commercially motivated however is less motivated by their own financial reward.
Achievement Motivators
The Director may:
- Enjoy being in control of people and resources
- Aim to be influential
- Like to be in position of authority or leadership
- Thrive on having responsibility for people and/or resources
The Builder may:
- Enjoy working towards targets
- Thrive on competitive, goal orientated tasks
- Like material reward
- Strive for above average standard of living
The Expert may:
- Seek knowledge and expertise
- Enjoy learning and insights which expand their knowledge
- Like to specialise
- Strive to achieve mastery in their chosen subject
Relationship Motivators
The Defender may:
- Enjoy stability and routine
- Like to know what they are doing is contributing to a secure future
- Working in environments where they know there is certainty
- Prefer to stick with what they know
The Friend may:
- Want to feel like they belong and being part of a team
- Enjoy friendships and rewarding relationships
- Like to be involved in tasks where they are connected with others
The Star may:
- Enjoy recognition for their contribution
- Like to feel respected
- Thrive on admiration and status
- Appreciate public recognition and praise
Growth Motivational Preferences
The Creator may:
- Enjoy opportunities to innovate
- Have the need to use their creative ability
- Like to be solution focused
- Enjoy creating original, cutting edge materials
The Spirit may:
- Thrive in environments where they are given freedom
- Enjoy being independent and choice driven
- Be certain individuals who seek freedom
- Prefer to manage their own workload and have a choice and independence
The Searcher may:
- Prefer to know the purpose and meaning of a task
- Want to know what they are doing makes a difference
- Thrive to provide things and services that are useful
- Need to believe in what they are doing
