Have you been thinking of taking up a new career? Maybe there is something exciting that you have always wanted to do but for one reason or another you have never quite got round to it. Do you have a small voice in the back of your head telling you why it won’t work? Perhaps you are afraid?
Here’s some good news for you. There are a couple of things that you can do today that will make a real difference.
First of all, book onto a course that will really help. Find out what motivates you and from that learn to play to your strengths. Let me explain a bit – if you find that you are motivated by money it probably isn’t the best idea to launch into something that doesn’t bring in much of an income. On the other hand if you long to make a difference to people’s lives it might not work well for you to do something that isn’t person focussed. The best way to do this is to learn more about Motivational Maps. There are a couple of ways to do this; join a course that helps you to understand the process and / or read one of the great books that there are available. Both give good opportunities to find out more about what matters for you and to get a flavour of what makes you tick in your career choice and set a plan.
The other part of the jigsaw is dealing with that voice of doubt. (Mine always sounds like my mother!) We have a great tendency to think that we are our thoughts. So, we tell ourselves that we are ‘too stupid’, ‘too afraid’ and very often that we are so angry. The great news is that we have the ability to not react to these thoughts. How wonderful is that? No one (did you hear that? No one.) can ‘make you angry’ – the truth is that we all have choice. We can choose to be angry or not to be angry. It’s OK, I can hear your scepticism, bear with me. The next time you feel anger sweeping over you – learn to rise above it. Take a breath, move back, literally step back and move up. Deep breath, step back, head up. We are the awareness of our thoughts and once you spot what is happening then you can rise above it. It takes practice but it can be done. And the same is true for those other negative thoughts that creep in. ‘I can’t become a coach / writer / accountant because …..’ are thoughts that you don’t have to own. Take a breath, step back, head up and check the reality. If you want the change enough and its really what motivates you then you can do it (whatever your long dead mother says!)
That longed for career change is there for you to grab. Check out your motivation and learn to let go of the thoughts that don’t help. Remember that we have 12 to 60 thousand thoughts a day and many of them are really not very sensible. Find out what you really want and then take a breath, step back, head up and go for it.
